The H.L. Hunley was a Confederate States of America submersible that demonstrated the advantage and danger of undersea warfare during the American Civil war. Although not this nation's first submarine, Hunley was the first submarine to engage and sink a warship Built in 1863, the nearly 40 foot long Hunley was fashioned from a cylindrical iron steam boiler, and designed to be hand powered by a crew of nine: eight to turn the hand-cranked propeller and one to steer and direct the boat.
On February 17,1864 the Hunley made a late night attack on USS Housatonic, a 1,240-ton (B) sloop-of-war with 16 guns, in Charleston Harbor off the coast of South Carolina. H.L. Hunley rammed Housatonic with spar torpedo packed with explosive powder and attached to a long pole on its bow. The spar torpedo embedded in the sloop's wooden side was detonated by a rope as Hunley backed away. The resulting explosion that sent Housatonic with five crew members to the bottom of Charleston Harbor also sank Hunley with its crew of eight. H.L. Hunley earned a place in the history of undersea warfare as the first submarine to sink a ship in wartime.
The Hunley was lost until located in 1995, and was  recovered in 2000 and is secured inside Charleston’sWarren Lasch Conservation Center in a specially designed tank of freshwater undergoing conservation.

Every model includes  pedestals, a polished mahogany base board, and a name plate.  Options include keel block mounting, waterline models, ships seals and ribbons, and weathering paint schemes.

The model build time is generally 20 weeks from receipt of the order and deposit. The normal procedure is a 50% deposit with the commissioning, with the balance due prior to shipping.  Note that prior to shipping, we take a series of photos of the model and send them to you for final review and approval – so you know exactly what your model will look like and allow for any necessary modifications.
