I recently spent some time in the Abaco region of the Bahamas. While there, I found several model makers who specialized in replicating local boats. One of the notable local boats, that caught my eye, is the "Abaco Dinghy". These are small (14-18 foot) wooden sailing dinghys that are still produced and sailed, and are a real pleasure to look at.
On Man O'War Cay in the Bahamas, the traditions of boat building reflect a culture of resourcefulness, simplicity, and artistry. There is no lofting, no truing molds, and no rigidly following architectural plans. You take out the transom and midship rising frame templates that your grand daddy left you, stretch a keel between them, and create the shape of a boat. The blend of craftsmanship and artistry produce beautiful boats with traditional character and charm.
I have partnered with a local Bahamian model maker to offer 12" (hull length) replica models of the Abaco Dinghies. These all wood, hand crafted models are framed and planked just like the full size boat. The models are only made to order and the colors can be selected. This is a rare opportunity to own a truly unique slice of the Bahamian nautical culture. The price is $795, which includes shipping within the USA
